Native American Heritage Month

Hey Y'all:

Until very recently I was ignorant about Native American's. I don't recall learning very much about the first American's in school expect for the delusional Thanksgiving meal that was prepared etc. I never knew about the deaths, stolen land, wars etc that Natives endured and are still living through in this country. I never knew about the inner workings of the Native American culture etc. I was introduced to the rich and often sad history of Native Americans in October when I started working at Indian Country Today Media Network. Presidential Proclamation -- National Domestic Violence Awareness Month, 2012

BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

A PROCLAMATION

For far too long, domestic violence was ignored or treated as a private matter where victims were left to suffer in silence without hope of intervention. As we mark the 18th anniversary of the landmark Violence Against Women Act, authored by Vice President Joe Biden, we reflect on how far we have come. We have made significant progress in changing laws and attitudes, providing support to survivors, and reducing the incidence of domestic violence. But we also know that we have not come far enough, and that there is more work left to be done. During National Domestic Violence Awareness Month, we stand with all those who have been affected by this terrible crime, recognize the individuals and groups who have stepped forward to break the cycle of violence, and recommit to putting an end to domestic violence in America.

Women's History Month 2012

Hey Y'all,

Today is the first day of Women's History Month. Here is President Obama's proclamation

NOW, THEREFORE, I, BARACK OBAMA, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim March 2012 as Women’s History Month. I call upon all Americans to observe this month and to celebrate International Women’s Day on March 8, 2012, with appropriate programs, ceremonies, and activities that honor the history, accomplishments, and contributions of American women. I also invite all Americans to visit www.WomensHistoryMonth.gov to learn more about the generations of women who have shaped our history.

In celebration I will profile 8 women that I know and love, who are an inspiration to me because of their brilliance and determination in a "mans world". This Day In History 11/4/08

Hey Y'all:

Do you remember where you were on November 4th 2008?
I do... I was on the line at PS 115 to make history! I was geared up to elect the first African American President of the United States!

Oddly enough I don't see any sites making note of this historic moment today. I searched the net and specifically went to History.com to see what video they had playing for today's history and was saddened to see that President Obama's success wasn't mentioned; am I over thinking or do you agree that to ignore this historic election is wrong?

Extended School Year... Yay or Nah?

Hey Y'all:

Just saw this article title on NewsOne and had to do a post -- President Obama: School year must be extended by month for US students to compete with China, India

I get it and I totally agree but here is my opinion. I think that if there weren't so many breaks during the school year there wouldn't be a need for another month of school. In NYC the children are out of school for Midwinter recess in February and then spring break in April. This after Thanksgiving break in Nov and Winter recess in Dec. both of those I get and totally agree with but the others I don't think are needed. A Monday off here and there should do it. Why do we take week long breaks? On another note how will this additional month be planned? What does this mean for teachers? Will they receive salary increases? Will schools be AC equiped? I think there is a lot to consider before clicking the DONE button. Just my opinion...
